Haven't laughed so hard since...hrm. Feels good.

"Hillary Clinton is a Communist!"

So, I had to wait around the post office this morning for the passport window to open (which it did, 15 minutes late, after the family waiting ahead of me went over to the stamp counter to bitch...). Always interesting people-watching at the post office.

The best was a woman about my age and size, lesbian-separatist boots and haircut, who found a "don't forget to vote for Hillary" postcard in her box, shouted "Hillary Clinton is a Communist!!" at the lobby, and ripped it up and threw it on the floor. Everyone in the line was kind of stunned...she went to the stamp counter, bought some stamps, and on her way out, she shouted at us again. "Hillary Clinton is a Communist!"

That time I grinned. She wasn't looking at us, or I might thanked her for her candor.

The family in front of me had been yapping about how much better Canada is than the U.S., so I thought I'd best keep the rest of my thoughts ("Obama's not far off...") to myself. But it's so damned refreshing to hear someone use the word "Communist" as an epithet, for a change.

Not to mention that was just weird!

Call me a misogynist, but...

No passes for having internal genitalia: anyone who sincerely cries in public after losing one skirmish--with no loss of life--is going to have a real hard time being Commander-in-Chief in these Interesting Times.

And this just makes me want to vomit:

"As a woman, I know it's hard to get out of the house and get ready," said Marianne Pernold, a local freelance photographer. "Who does your hair?"

Good God. Migraines make it hard to get out of the house. Depression makes it hard to get out of the house. A thousand different medical conditions neither Hillary nor I have make it hard to get out of the house. Having to do your own hair when you can't find anyone in Podunk to your liking? Give me a break.

I'm going to be bummed if she drops out, though; low-hanging comedy fruit.

On Hillary Clinton: "I think America's ready for a woman president . . . just not that woman. Being married to somebody doesn't make you good at their job. I've been with my wife 10 years now. If she got up here right now, y'all wouldn't laugh. At all. You get on a plane tomorrow, you want the pilot's wife flying you?"

I wouldn't want my gynecologist's husband doing her job, either, so don't bother telling me I'm anti-woman. :P

Single women

Myrna Blyth in today's National Review Online:

How have women really voted these past twenty years? In general Democrats tend to capture the vast majority of African-American women voters, single women, and economically vulnerable women. White married women, especially those with children, tend to slightly favor Republicans, while more traditional homemakers and evangelical Christian women have been firmly in the Republican camp.

Though single women in the past have not come out to vote in force, if they did turn out for Hillary in 2008, that could give her an over-the-top boost in some key states.

I always laugh at the idea that women, even a subset like "single women", are a monolithic voting block, and Blyth seems to share my cynicism. And here's something that's been true as long as I've been voting: Neither party cares about single heterosexual women without children (although the Dems make an exception for women who wish to remain child-free by killing their unborn). Democrats are all about the single mother, especially the low-income or minority single mother, and lesbians of any relationship/child status; Republicans are all about the married women, especially mothers.

I throw in with the GOP because they're less ideologically committed to taking my earnings away, and more committed to keeping America from being destroyed by Islamofascists. But it's uneasy. All the "couples this, families that, marriage this, children that" rhetoric wears on me. "Parents should be allowed to use their money to raise their families as they see fit"--I don't disagree, but why shouldn't I be allowed to use my money as I see fit, instead of how Hillary sees fit?

Back to the point, it doesn't have to be a foregone conclusion that "all single women will vote for Hillary in 2008." But the GOP needs to make more of an effort to include the old-maid aunts of The Children.
